Love, Paris

Robbin Ahrold

We strolled along the river Seine as night began to fall

Twenty-somethings so in love with life, we thought we had it all

A little bistro at midnight ‘neath the Eiffel Tower’s glow

The bridges rang with our wild song, and how the wine did flow

We let the night go on forever, chased away the morning dew

We were in love with Paris, and Paris loved us too

New York may be the city where my life is rooted down

Greenwich Village and Brooklyn, Broadway and Midtown

But as Bogey said to Bergman before they had to part

We will always have Paris, and Paris always has my heart

You were the cute and clever girl who stole my heart as those days flew

Our French companions loved us, shared their lives and friendship grew

We quoted Moliere and Sartre, sang along with Jacques Brel songs

And loved the sound of that sweet language rolling off our tongue

The Latin Quarter was our playground, and every day was new

We were in love with Paris, and Paris loved us too

I love Berlin and London, Rome and Amsterdam are cool

Buenos Aires, Santiago, Bogota and Rio too

But I found you in Paris, that’s where our love got its start

We will always have Paris, and Paris always has my heart

We walked the narrow, ancient streets where Franklin dined with Lafayette

Our lunch a picnic in the park, with wine and cheese and a baguette

That was so many years ago, times gone but you remain

Today we walk these streets together and still sing the same refrain

Recall how love was born in crazy days, and with that magic crew

We will always have Paris, thank God Paris gave me you

We will always have Paris, thank God Paris gave me you

About the song

Take a trip back in time to Paris in the sixties with a group of Franco-American twenty-somethings, see the “City of Light” through their eyes. The whole of Paris is their merry-go-round, dawn and dusk rude conventions to be flouted, a boundless escapade across the storied streets of the capital, where love is the ageless dialect.
